is my rooster protective?

I have a dark brown leghorn rooster and he has only attacked me once and it was a tinny scratch he is really scidish… and I was wondering if he would protect my hens if a hawk or something was killing one of them like I said he is super scidish I can't get within 10 ft of him without him running away he is over a year old so will he protect my 8 hens?
