Is sand a good option for a dust box?

We just bought some sand and put it in a shallow tote is sand good for the "dust".
 
Indeed, it has been my experience that anything excessively dusty, ie: DE, wood ash, silica sand etc are all to be avoided due to them being severe lung irritants. I simply dig out a couple clean shovel-fulls of good 'ol garden dirt and spread it out to dry a bit, then let'em have it! We also have a mint garden they can wriggle around in to their hearts content, but it's been a pretty damp squid for a summer this year, here at the northern bunker complex.

Clay soil is great for dust baths once it dries to powder. It's really funny to watch them stand up and shake off a big cloud.
