Is she a Roo???

I have a black silkie that hatched in June that I thought was a pullet until I saw her mount another pullet (white cross breed) yesterday. The reason I thought it was a she is because she makes the same 'Brock Brock Brock' noise as the rest of my hens and has never crowed. The black silkie and the white cross breed are at the very bottom of the pecking order and stay away from my other layers (white leghorns and red sex links). I recently put 3 new babies in a pen next to rest of them and 1 of them is definitely a roo, crows, puffs up, and protects the other 2 babies. How can I tell if my black silkie is a roo or not??

I've read that it's pretty much impossible to sex a silkie. I think you're just going to have to wait. Welcome to the site!

I would post in this forum for best results: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this also, you may want to try one of the Silkie threads, just type in Silkie in the search bar. Cockerels have a raised walnut shaped comb and pullets have a longer, flat comb. Good luck to you.

silkies are very difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. old - the fact that the silky mounts the other chick doesn't mean it is a roo(in hiding) it is also a display of dominance. Since you say she and the white chick are at the bottom of the pecking order - I think the silkie expects this to be an easy takeover. Then she gets to be the boss over somebody - probably a big ego boost for her (?)
