One of my 21 week old pullets is "growling/screeching" in the nest box this morning. She is also crammed in with another pullet. She does this even when all other nest boxes are empty, and it isn't always the same one occupant or nest. Lol

Anyway, is this how one acts when they are starting to go broody? Or is she just grumpy? I heard her doing it before I was even in the coop so she wasn't specifically growling at me.

Could be a broody screech....they can do that other times too.
Might just be telling that other hen to get away.

Here are my go-to signs of a broody:
Is she on nest most the day and all night?
When you pull her out of nest and put her on the ground, does she flatten right back out into a fluffy screeching pancake?
Does she walk around making a low cluckcluckcluckcluckcluck(ticking bomb) sound on her way back to the nest?

If so, then she is probably broody and you'll have to decide how to manage it.
