This is our partridge chantecler
We are starting to think "she" is really a he but have no idea. We have 4 different breeds so have nothing to compare her/him to. We were starting to think pullet but now we are thinking rooster.
Anyone have experience and can help us out. We have a small backyard flock of 4. We are not allowed roosters so will have to search for a good home if she really is a he. She is 6/7 weeks old. Is it too early? What are we looking for in this breed?

I am not familiar with Chanteclers but suspect pullet. I don't see any red coloration on face or any wattle developmemt. Unfortunately, the tail feathers haven't developed, which is a good tell. If they seem curved and pointed, probably a cockerel. Defined and rounded, probably a pullet. I would wait to be sure.

I'm not familiar with the breed either, but I'm also going with pullet. The comb, while wide, isn't reddening at all. The pattern on the feathers is a female pattern. Unless something drastic changes in the next couple of weeks, I think you have a female.

Good job taking photos on all parts of it's body. :thumbsup
I'm sorry that is most certainly a male. He as red feathers on him, and Chanteclers have cushion combs, so that is actually a pretty large comb for his age and when we got red feathers on a chicken with that type of patterning it indicated male pretty early, a female would have more uniform colors in shape and coloring. Look it up.

I don't know the breed either but I know the color/pattern.
Partridge pattern is different in males vs females when they're adults.
Usually one of the first differences in the chicks when they feather in is the chest area. Males should have a black chest while females have a reddish or reddish patterned.
From pic I'd say pullet.
Find some pics of adults and you should see the differences in the sexs. Compare and see.

I think it is a bit young to sex. Partridge chanticlers should have the same color pattern as partridge rocks or partridge cochins, but this one seems a bit off in color. Plus the legs look white, not yellow, which is also off.

I agree with what The Moonshiner is saying but the fact of the off coloring and also those deeper red feathers at the shoulders and coming in at the back makes me think that caution is in order in this case. I think you should wait until it feathers out completely and then post again. And keep an eye out for black feathers at the breast.

Thanks for everyones opinions so far. I guess we will have to wait longer.
Her legs are pink. She is the smallest of our flock but lile I said, we have 4 different breeds so nothing to compare her to.
I will post more pictures in another week or two.

More pics. S/he is starting to get her tell feathers and they have a green tinge to them. Does anyone know if this means it is a cockerel.

Hi, just wondering if this turned out to be a rooster? I have 5 partridge chantecler chicks (4 week old) and one has this same coloring. Thanks!
