I was thinking about using shredded paper or shredded newspaper for a bedding for my chicks when they hatch but, I'm sure they will try and eat it. is it bad if they eat it? I know theres ink and stuff in news paper.

not straight away after a week or so when they know what food is i use shredded paper after about 2 weeks

No it is not a lot for eco-bedding. It expands like foam so you will get a lot for your money.

Modern newspaper ink is soy-based and doesn't contain lead. The risk of them eating it is more of a risk of impaction from eating too much. Of course, that can happen with shavings just as easily but fortunately, I don't think many chicks are that stupid.

OH, and my chickens don't eat the paper. They will eat a piece of silicone caulking (and who can blame them -- it wiggles when you run with it?!) but they know that their shredded paper is not food.
