Hello Everyone!
I’m wondering if the color on the Marans comb is normal. It seems to look a bit dry and purple-ish. Some of the other pullet combs look a bit dry and pale.
Here’s my little background story... I’m a newbie and I have had my own flock of five since May. I have two Brahmas and three Easter Eggers that are about eight months old. I live in Southern California, and lately the average is about 45F at night. I’ve lurked around on Backyard Chickens and I've been trying to learn as much as I can in order to provide the best for my chickens.
Late last night, I took in four pullets from a lady because she had to get rid of them within two days or get evicted from the house that she is renting. My fiancé and I decided to take them in since we have the room in our backyard. My plan is to quarantine them for two weeks and then slowly introduce them to my flock.
Here’s the information on them:
I attached the photos of the Marans and the other pullets below. Please, let me know if it’s something to be concerned about it and what type of treatment that I will be needing. Thank you in advance and for taking the time to read this.

Here’s the information on them:
- The lady is a newbie and wasn’t sure what breed they are but I’m assuming two are Easter Eggers, one Buff Orpington, and one French Copper Marans?? (Please, correct me if I am wrong)
- They are about five months old.
- They free roam around in the backyard and by nightfall they go back to their coop.
- They are on Manna Pro Chick Starter/Grower Medicated Feed (crumbs), and table scraps (which I’m not sure of what her kids gave them)
- They are acting normal from what I have been observing so far: alert, pecking the ground, eating, and drinking water.
- Their poop looks normal, but I noticed that it smells worse than my chickens even if it’s cecal poop or not.
- Pine shavings for bedding.
- They were not given grits. (I gave them a side bowl of grits when we got home)
- They have not been dewormed
- Their waterer and feeder were FILTHY, like I do not know when they were last cleaned. When I got home, I cleaned and sanitized the crap out of them. I gave them fresh water and a separate waterer with electrolytes.
- I checked for mites and fleas. They have none, just dry skin.
- I checked their vents and they are clean, and their legs/feet look clean.
- They lady mentioned that her kids like to chase them around.
