Since my dog, Mona, has proven she cannot be trusted with chickens my husband wants to build them a large run. His plans are for a large square, 25' each side. The coop will be in this area, but will be raised 2 or 3 feet off the ground so they can go underneath.
We have 9 chicks now (white leghorns), but want more in the spring. I don't want them to be crowded, so how many chickens can happily live in an area this size?

Thay say 4 sqf per bird you have more than enough room for what you have and more in the spring

Siz8003 the recommended minimum of 4 sq. ft. per chicken is actually for the coop. For the run, it's 10 sq.ft. As you say, though, it's still plenty of room.

A 25 x 25 yard.... 625 sq ft will comfortably hold 62.5 chickens LOL, ok, so at least 60....how big is the coop? You need 4 sq ft per bird in the coop. More chickies in the spring! WOOHOO!!!

My husband said he's building the coop large enough for 25 chickens.

So I suppose we'll end up with 25...and the run will be plenty big enough for them.
