Is there a cheaper way?

I sprout black oil sunflower seeds for mine and grow mealworms. They also get most of my past-prime produce. For some reason they won't eat raw zucchini. If you grow zucchini, you know how disappointing this is. buc, the grocery store idea is excellent, especially since ours always seems to have really tired looking organics.

Where do you get mealworms to get started growing your own...pet stores?

My chickens enjoy those zucchini whales that escape my attention - I just slice the mighty zukes in half (use a chain saw if necessary

) or in several pieces (to avoid bickering). They especially go for the seeds and eventually, all of it.

I have a scrap jar on the kitchen counter that I fill throughout the day and give to my chickens. I also give them outdated milk (was told it would not do any harm)(so far it hasn't). I also give them potato peals and leftover potatoes. (No harm there either thus far)
Not only does giving the leftovers and scraps to the chickens save on feed it also cuts down on trash. The one thing I have heard though is to be careful with onion and garlic because this flaver can come through in the eggs.
