Is there a smaller size of poultry netting than 1"?

I was at TSC today and wanted to pick up some poultry netting to keep my new chicks INSIDE their pen (the coop is fenced in...but the spaces are too large to contain bantam chicks).

I know about hardware cloth...but it's MUCH more expensive and a pain to deal with!

Thanks for your time!

I lined my poultry netting with window screen mesh. The kind you use for windows and screen doors. You can get metal or fabric. In my pens it keeps the chicks in, mice and insects out.

To answer your question directly, yes there is 1/2" poultry netting (chickenwire)... though it can be harder to find (see if your feedstore can special order it for you). I use it mostly to keep chicks where they belong and it works great.

That said...

...if you are just looking for something to "smallen up" the holes on larger size mesh, to keep chicks in place or to discourage reach-through accidents from either direction, the plastic garden netting works really well. It is about 1/2" mesh size, very easy to work with, and inexpensive. A raccoon could rip through it, sure, but if it's just covering (say) 1x1" mesh, ripping through it won't do a raccoon much GOOD and won't cause a major risk as long as you notice the damage the next day and fix it. So for lower-risk areas (not next to a roost) I think it is quite adequate.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Thanks, guys! This is really helpful. I'm going to see if I can order the 1/2"...if not, I'm probably going to go with hardware cloth. This is for my chick "nursery" and the next batch I'm raising are bantams...and although the are locked tight ad safe at night...I want to make sure they stay IN the run once they are big enough to be out during the day. I don't want any curious cat paws able to try and play with the "toy".

Thanks, again!!!
