is there anything extra to a peacock?

i am picking up my peacock tomarrow and im wondering if there is anything extra you have to do to them and can you raise them with chickens i need all the info i can get

Mine are with chickens all the time. They eat the same feed that the chickens do, and rule the roost, so to speak. I've found that peafowl are quite hardy. Mine spend most of their time outdoors, even in cold weather. They love meat scraps, and I try to give mine some in real cold weather. I live in South Dakota, so winter is more than just a rumor here. In fact, the long range forecast is for -30 to -40 degrees next week. Hope they are wrong. Enjoy your peacock.

jhm that is WAY too cold for anyone or anything! It was in the 60's today and had to put on a jacket. Brr.

Briar, it is probably a good idea to deworm all birds regularly. This is because chickens are potential carriers of diseases lethal to peafowl(and also turkeys).. the one being of most concern is Blackhead which is basically transmitted by worms. Keep them worm-free then the chances of the peafowl getting sick is lowered.

Not every chicken has this or other diseases lethal to peafowl, that is why there seems to be conflicting reports of people mixing them with 'no problems' while others encounter losses.

It is a very good idea to keep new peafowl completely confined(not let loose at all) for a good while.. they don't take to a new home as easy or quick like chickens do. Keep them in there for weeks, months is better just to be sure.

Basically there are a few precautions, but if done, they are easy keepers.

Briar, depend what type of peacock. The green ,or hight % spaulding will need heat, above 32 f.

Like Kev said chicken can be carriers of Diseases. That harm peafowl and turkeys. Make sure to worm him.


I would never Risk mixing chicken with my peafowl, I do have over 100 so that could be costly.

If your peacock is a india blue, would be ok without heat. Mine stay in the barn, but it does get down into the negative numbers.

If you let him out good odds he will take off. Better if you had a few peahen before letting him loose.

thanks he is india blue im not raising in with the chicken but would it hurt if he is in the cage beside them and i do vacinate wazine and sulmet and he will get the vacination to

He will never be let out my mamaw said if he ever gets out hes a floating duck in front of a gun so he cant be let out and we have wild pefowl here in carter county there everywhere in carter city so chances are he will take off.
