Feathers of Eden
Songster
When I was a kid I used to watch hens teaching their chicks how to survive and eat for hours on end and I was always warned not to approach broody hens and their chicks .
The land race I am talking about were very protective about their chicks and this protective maternal instinct was very important for the people as a good trait to encourage . They culled the hens who did not have a great maternal instinct and fell short on raising chicks.
I said all that to say it was always kind of dangerous to approach a broody hen to check the status of her eggs and I witnessed many occasions the broody hens attacked the owner with all her means.
To tackle this common issue they had a Chicken whisperer in the village. She was around 60 years old when I first saw her. They used to call her for trouble making over protective broody hens and she used to come and chat with the broody hen for a minute or so and then she used to sing a calming tune to the hen for another minute or so and then she had no problem moving the hen out of her nest to check their eggs health status.
I never saw even once a broody hen pick at her( a stranger to the hen) while the owner who raised the hen from chicks could not do that.
It made me think whether there is such a thing as chicken whisperer or any of you have observed or heard about this kind of animal connection before?
