I picked up 3 OE chicks yesterday. They are 3 weeks old. When I got them home and settled in, I noticed that two of them have some scabs on their backs. Other than that they are eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping, otherwise seem healthy and happy as clams. The scabs are very dry and somewhat thick/hard. They seem to be healing well. There’s no redness, swelling, or drainage.
My question is : Should I put a dab of antibiotic ointment (without pain relief of course) or Aquaphor on it, or just leave it be? All my “research” seems 50/50. My only concern is that the scabs dry out and fall off or crack too quickly, leaving a raw open area. What are y’all’s thoughts?
Thanks!!

Where did you get them from? If they were overcrowded they may have been pecking each other. Unless the scabs are an issue, I would leave them alone. If they are getting pulled off too soon, and causing them to re scab over, then use some plain antibiotic ointment on them, or vaseline. I'd apply with a q tip, just on the scab in question.

I got them from Russell Feed. I'm not sure if they were overcrowded at one point, but when I picked them up yesterday, they were the only three left in that bin, and they are 3 weeks old. Obviously, it could have happened earlier. I will take your advice and let it be. If it looks like they are trying to fall off too soon, then I'll put a little on.

I'm a (people) nurse, and back in the day, the adage in dermatology was, "if it's wet, make it dry, and if it's dry, make it wet." lol
