My son got this duck for Christmas. His name is Ping. We wondered if anyone can tell whether he is a drake or a hen? Not that it really matters but we were curious.

The easiest way to tell a drake from a hen is their voice. If it sounds like "awk awk awk" with a bit of a raspy touch, then it's male. Females you'll know right away...they make a definate "Quack!". There's a sticky in the duck forums, click that, then click "sexing ducks" and it will take you to a thread with audio of a drake and hen. I'm not sure about runners...but I think the drakes MIGHT have a drake feather. It's just a modified tail feather that curls toward their head.

Yes, I agree with Pet Duck Boy the voice is the way to tell at Ping's age. I am not sure that he would have a drake feather yet if he was hatched around Christmas time. ( or is he older than eight weeks already?) He should have more of a rasp if male, a definite quack if female.

He is a lovely runner. I am also looking at the coloring around his face - female penciled runners (what he looks like to me) generally don't have as dark markings as I am seeing in the photo. But, photo's sometimes don't capture coloring quite right.

He hatched in October so he is actually about 4 months old. I got the eggs from Ahappychick as a trade for some work I did for her.

Sadly, he is the only one of the 5 ducklings that hatched to survive. They were all supposed to be a gift for my nephew for Christmas, but only this one lived until Christmas.
