I have narrowed down my searches and done a lot of research. I am trying to make sure that I get the best flock I can for not only my area but for my needs. If you have any suggestions please let me know and if I posted this in the wrong place I am sorry.
I have decided that my roo will be a Black Copper Maran. I like the way they look and with his genetics my eggs should all be a little darker at least. To add to this I will have hens of these sorts:
2 welsummer
2 cuckoo maran
2 easter egg
1 silver spangled hamburg
2 black jersey giants
2 speckled sussex
I am also getting 1 blue silkie of unknown gender. They will all have the mareks vaccination.
The blue silkie is for my husband so he has at least one bird he can get attached to. I do plan on eating all of these birds eventually when they are no longer laying eggs. As far as breeding I think the maran will make some nice sized birds with pretty dark eggs. No clue how the egg colors will work for the second generation but if someone has any experience with it I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for all the advice in advance. Oh btw I will be living in Glen Rose, Tx with these birds. The coop I am building will have a fan built in that is solar powered. I will also be raising them to enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool.
