I was doing chicken chores this morning part of which includes cleaning any poop from their sand dust bathing area. I noticed what I first thought was a tiny soft egg, but closer inspection showed a sort of cord attached to one end - kind of twisted like sausage casing. It was soft and small compared to a regular egg. When I broke it open, the contents sort of resembled yolk and white but more curdled looking.

Any ideas? Since all the chickens dust bathe in this area, no idea who laid it.

is say that if you have any POL hens or pullets, that their are responsible for this one. if you do have POL put the in the next boxes for half an hour and they'll figure out where there supposed to lay.

It's just a mistake. If it happens repeatedly it would be a cause for concern. An occasional thing is no biggie.

Was the shell soft? It kinda looks like the membrane-y layer just beneath the shell. The twisted cord looks like it could be the cord that anchors a yolk.

Never figured out who actually laid it, but it was the only one - and it was soft. No pullets laying at the time so just one of those weird chicken things.
