Just noticed 2 days ago that one of my Easter Egger bantam chicks has a growth underneath it’s beak in the waddle area. Now today I saw one forming on the other side of its beak. The larger growth is hard and bony or wart-like and has now split open a little. The chick screams when you touch it but seems fine otherwise.

Is this fowl pox? If it is, is it already too late to vaccinate the others? I am new to raising chicks/chickens and this is 1 of 16 chicks. They are 3 and 4 weeks old. I don’t know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated. I was planning to only keep 5 and sell/give away the rest so if this is something contagious, I’m in big trouble 😭

Day old chicks and unaffected adult birds can be vaccinated; during an outbreak unaffected birds can be vaccinated.

I'm not sure if it is fowl pox. Could it possibly be some kind of rubbing or bumping injury? Do your chicks have to stick their beaks in something to get food and water?

Keep an eye on it and look for any changes. You might want to try and isolate the chick. And practice hygiene measures to reduce the chance of spread in case it is fowl pox.

Sorry I forgot to mention I’ve separated him from the rest of the chicks.
I don’t think so. I just have the cheap plastic feeders so there’s nothing sharp. Also they’re more like nodules than cuts and they seem to be growing a little every day. Thanks for the response!
