Hi all,
This is my first post but I've been reading the forums for months. Thanks for all of your sage advice
I have a barred rock little lady that I believe is very ill. I could use your help. My questions are:
- I've done a lot of research to read about bound eggs, but I don't understand what it means when the egg is clearly broken. Is this still considered a bound egg? Could this be a different condition?
- Is there anything I can do besides having to use a latex glove and...
?
- Does this sound like more than a bound egg? I was very surprised to see her crop so very large.
- Should I be worried about our other chicken?
- Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance!
1) What type of bird , age and weight: Barred Rock; 2.5; normal weight
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Lethargic; Sitting a lot; closing eyes; Visible parts of an egg coming out of her vent (and still coming). I've seen both a white, rubbery material and yolk but I haven't seen any shells. It doesn't look like a full grown egg (it's not very runny and it's coming out slowly like rubber) but I could be wrong; Her crop is extremely swollen (size of tennis ball) and very squishy. Not firm; Her vent is also a little swollen - but not red.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? At least 24 hours. However, I should note one weird thing. Our 2 birds are in a 12 X 12 fenced in area with a coop in the middle. The fence has a mesh roof. Ever since we got them the fence, they have slept on top of their coop. I think they figure they're already covered by a mesh roof, why sleep inside? But over the last several months, every 3-6 weeks or so, we've found egg yolk all over the top of the roof in the morning. It's like one of them laid an egg while sleeping and it broke. But we never find the shell. I've always assumed that one of them laid really early in the morning, the egg breaks and one of them has eaten it. But now I realize that might have been a symptom. Ugh.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No. But our other bird keeps puffing up and getting angry - almost like she's broody. Can't tell if this is unrelated or if she's trying to act not sick.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. No idea.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. She's both eating and drinking - but much less frequently than usual and it seems to be decreasing.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think she's pooping much and when she is it's runny.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? When I figured out that something was horrifically wrong, I put antibiotics in her water. I've done this before when one of them has gotten sick and they've always made a full recovery. I just gave it to them this morning. I also just gave her a nice bath and tried to let her soak a bit. She's passed a lot, if not most of the egg, but it was clear she's not done. After the bath, I discovered the inflamed crop.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I'd prefer DIY care but I can take her to a vet. I'd like to try some things at home first. I don't know if our vet has chicken experience.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Attached.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use In addition to what I mentioned above, there little area is covered in mulch and their coop, which they only go in to to lay, is pine shavings. The place isn't immaculate, but it's pretty clean. I feel I should also note that I live in Arizona -- it's 100 degrees all day right now. So they're stressed.
