Is this normal for a new layer?

I found this is my coop this morning. I've read a lot about soft shelled eggs, but have never seen a picture quite like this with the long string attached. Is this normal? I have a flock of 8 that just started laying within the past 3 weeks. Calcium is available to them at all times and they are all on layer feed. Thank you for any feedback!

It isn't normal but happens on occasion. I've had one exactly like that but never again.
