I have a 20 month old Jersey Giant who's gone broody for the first time. I've shooed her off the nest for two days and she didn't protest much. I don't think she was fully committed yet.
Today, she was much more persistent. I shooed her out again around 6pm and blocked off all three nests and went out to check on her about a half hour later and she's put herself to up on the roost. That's about 2 1/2 hours before she would normally go to bed.
Is that normal behavior?
And is that good for her to be up on the roost? I've got all the doors and nest box lid open to get maximum air flow through the house. (Their little house sits inside a large predator proof run so I can leave it open like that all night safely.)
I just don't have the heart to separate her in a cage like others say they do to break a broody.
I think I'll try this for a few more days and if that doesn't break her, I'll just let her go through the motions.
