Is this the best way to deal with snakes in the laying house?

I placed a whole container of new golf balls in the nest themselves for the snakes. My Grandfather did this all the time when I was a child. Did I do the right thing as my golf balls have been disappearing?

nice idea about the traps....but the snakes I got here... i really don't mind being cruel to them ... so far I have had 3 rattlers and 2 copperheads in my nest.

not a pleasing sound to come into the henhouse to gather the eggs and hear a rattle...........

Fair enough! Then keep on doing what you're doing :) I'm sure it's working since I can't imagine where else they may be going. And even if something else were to take it and realize later that it was not food, you are conditioning them to ignore future eggs (in theory). Kind of how before a strawberry plant bears fruit you can put rocks painted to look like strawberries under them. Any birds that spot them and try to eat these fake strawberries will find out quickly that they aren't really berries, and when the fruit eventually comes in they hopefully ignore the real thing.

I started with 10 golf balls. I counted them today. I got 5 left. So maybe that's 5 critters that won't be visiting my chickens again.

I got a roll of the .5 inch x 1 inch wire and I think I am going to just make a tap out of some of it.
