Is This The End?

5 years is a lot for production breeds. It's recommended to add young pullets every 2 or 3 years so you won't end up with the whole flock suddenly dying of old age.
If you want pet chickens it's also preferred to chose heritage breeds who tend to live longer lives than production breeds. They allow you to enjoy their company for longer time and you don't need to add young birds as often.

Our PBR was 5 yrs old when she started acting the same way. Our young rooster didn't understand and was beating up on her so we quickly let her out of the chicken yard and bought a prefab coop. She went in it on her own and died peacefully 2 days later.
