I have two Speckled Sussex that are 14 weeks old and 3 Buff Orpingtons that are 13 weeks. I keep reading about people noticing red faces on their chickens prior to egg laying starting. This is my first round as a chicken mom, so I'm not sure what that looks like exactly. Took photos today...not sure if their coloring is just normal "chicken face" or if it is the reddening of the face that indicates laying is very soon to come? What do you say, experienced chicken keepers? And if you happen to see any rooster qualities in any of my chickens here, please mention it as these are all supposed to be ladies.

And just because Herby (yes, Herby is supposed to be a girl) likes to photo bomb and it cracks me up...

Yes, but they still have quite a way to go yet. They will get even redder. Sorry, I'm not experienced at sexing them, though, for what it's worth, they look like young females to me.

Good luck with your egg-waiting!

The combs are pink until right before they lay. Herbe looks like a hen to me. By 15 weeks most roos would be crowing and trying to mount your lady chick.DUe to miss sexing we ended up with a roo this spring and he was crowing at 7 weeks. He is about 16 weeks old now and the people who took him have been getting getting fertile egg for almost a month.

Mine are a bit farther along than that and they are still freeloading.:)
