Is this the wrong time to molt?

I have three hens and one of them is losing feathers like crazy. It looks like someone shredded a feather pillow in their run!! Seriously, there are feathers EVERYWHERE!!!

Anyhow I think this is the wrong time for molting? Is this normal? If not, what could it be?

It's most definitely molting season. Totally normal.

Right time for molting. My yard looks as if a hen exploded.

Fall and early winter is when they usually molt. There are also mini-molts that occur for pullets.

What's funny is that eventually the field mice gather up the feathers and make nests with them, so I never have to clean them up. We have a field next to the pen.
