Hi everyone. Our family just started with chickens, we have three chicks and wanted to know if it was too early to determine if they are girls or boys. They were one day old when we got them from the feed store and now they a little over two weeks. The breeds are one Barred Rock and two Rhode Island Reds.

Until they lay an egg, they are too young to tell.

However, that is no fun and there are ways to guess. Going on the, "hens get tail feathers first" rule, I would say the brown ones are girls and the black one a boy. Which also works out with the black one's comb coming through already.

If that barred rock is a boy, it has some really, really dark legs for a boy. Most BR girls have dark legs and boys have lighter legs. But then again, it's not always 100% either.

Bottom line is, it's still WAAYYY to early to tell anything definitive on those breeds.
