Two days ago I let my girls out of the coop and Nugget came down the ramp limping. She stood there with her leg lifted up and wasn't moving much. The rooster tried to get on her and she tried to hop back in the coop so I helped her up and closed the door. After everyone went on their way, I opened the coop and she was laying in the corner. I checked her out and nothing jumped out at me. No open wounds, no swelling, no broken bones but she holds the leg up or pitifully limps on it when she is trying to move. The only other

thing is that her leg is green which I assume is bruising. I am thinking the horse stepped on her but I really am not sure. I am posting a picture and was wondering if someone could tell me if they have seen this before. I have her in a box where she happily lays down for most of the day. I haven't seen much improvement over the three days she has been in confinement and am getting a little concerned that I am missing something. Any advice?

The green is bruising for sure. You might try making her a chicken sling to sit in for several times a day. Google chicken slings and chairs, and you will see many simple ones. Place her food and water in front of the sling, and put some chick vitamins in her water. Things like chopped eggs, tuna, and a bit of plain yogurt can be good for her in addition to her usual chicken feed. Can she stand, move both legs, and does she curled her toes under? If a vet might be possible, you could get an xray to look for a broken bone.

I greatly appreciate your response! I have had chickens for a little over a year and absolutely love having them around the yard! I will look into the sling, thank you!! She does curl her toes under so I don't think it is her toes that are hurting. She will stand there and have her foot like it is in the picture but she doesn't put any weight on it. She is such a sweet girl and she actually laid her first egg today, even in the shape she is in!

You could dose her with the homeopathic remedy Arnica, probably in 200c or 1m. It helps speed the healing of bruises. You can just dissolve a couple of the pellets in her water.

I know some people don't believe that homeopathics work, but I've used them on myself, my family, and my animals for many years with great results. Also, if you don't believe they will work, then you will also believe they can't do any harm.
