I've read that ISA Brown hens tend to die young of egg laying complications because they were bred to be egg laying machines. I have 5 pullets that I bought at TSC as ISA Browns, not really knowing much about chickens. These are my first, and I'm in love. They're very personable, friendly, curious, wonderful pets.

I read somewhere online about "growing them slow" so they can live longer lives. How would I go about that? Or is it just a bunch of hogwash?

Not correct.

They can die early in life because they are not managed correctly for what they are. Egg laying machines.

Allowing them to come into production to early in life and missfeeding them when they are older and capable of producing eggs that will harm them is what happens.
