It has been awhile since I was on Backyard Chickens. Hoping to visit more often in the future. Though I ahve over 50 years experience with poultry (I started young) and am a lifetime member of the American Poultry Association, I need your input. A few months ago I accepted a position with a metal structure company. Recently, I was promoted to General managing Agent for the Eastern United States. In a few weeks we are relocating the company and fabrication plant to the Arkansas Ozarks Mountains. We will also relocate to be near it. I have been given the opportunity to help design our all new line of poultry and small livestock barns.

So far my thoughts are on having a three section barn, with a hatching room, brooder room and breeding pens in each Lean-to. The barn pictured is what we will start will. I want to include "Frame-outs" for either doggy doors or other type breeding pen doors to the outside runs. We also want to make available "Lean-to" frames (no roof.siding) so these can be finished with fencing and netting/fencing on the top. I have tons of ideas from over the years. I want some 12'w x 21' L and then some 36'W x 41'L or even longer. This is an opportunity that a poultry fancier longs for.

What would you want in a Poultry Hatchery & Breeding Barn?

Adequate Food storage for so many birds- possible auger in door on side for a bulk bin?

Automatic water system

Expanded electrical system to run all incubator, heat lamps etc with extra plug ins

Area for egg collection and packaging, possibly small area for desk and records

Drop chicken doors with timer

Fans and closeable ventilation screens for cold weather

Doors wide enough to get wheelbarrows in and out easily, or tall/wide enough for a bobcat or lawn tractor to drive down center aisle for hauling away waste

Set up if pens so nesting boxes are situated so the back is towards the aisle, slowing for quick collection of eggs without going into each pen

I guess any feature that saves time for a farmer/breeder is a good feature. Also keep in mind convertibility. Can the shed be easily used for something else? Will it maintain it's value/resale if the buyer has to move or decides to get out of chickens or downsize? For example, are the sides tall enough to be used as a horse stall or padock?
