Well, about six weels ago I went to my local pet store to get food for my rescued ferret, at the store there are sometimes animals that have been rescued in need of a forever home...well, that day, I went in and saw this huge red rooster in a cage, marked $2.00. I saw him, he saw me and it was love at first sight ;) ...he is gorgeous! I asked the atendant if he could just live in my backyard, she said "of course" so it was a done deal. I brought him home, he was quite during the ride. When we got home, I just kept in the box in my office, he would pick and take a look around...so well behave, I thought! Couple of hours later, I let him loose in the backyard (it's fenced) and he started pecking and singing (boy he is loud!). I didn't have a home for him, so for the first three nights he slept in the box. At sundown he just waited for me to let him in...he is so smart!. :)
Couple of days later, I finally found a guy that sells coops, when I went to pick it up...I saw he had about 15 hens free ranging...then, the light bulb turn on...."awwww, I could have chickens" It all clicked!. I got a little coop for "Gallote" the rooster.
I git back hime and announced to my husband, "I'm building a chichen coop, we'll have hens so we can get eggs".
Next day, I got 5 (what's allowed) my girls seemed to like me, I got them at about a week old so they are getting spoiled. I got a red one, two black sex links and two black and whites (forgive me I still don't know all the breeds).
I stumble onto your site while researching for coops plans/designs. I got to tell you, I built a mansion for them. I'm proud of our work (my neighbor and my children help :D) I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

P.S. Gallote loves his new family, and his new home...he hasn't try to fly away!

What a wonderful feel good story, I needed that at the end of the day. Great that you found a super nice rooster. I think it was kismet. Gallote sounds perfect. Boy, it was his lucky day and now he has a harem.

Welcome to BYC, awfully glad you joined us - best of luck with your feathered friends.

Welcome to BYC! You've built a very pretty coop. Thanks for sharing the pics. Galotte is a beautiful rooster and I'm sure he'll be quite the ladies' man. Good luck with your flock.
