So I made the mistake many here have made before and stopped by TSC today while I was in the area, they got their first batch in today. To make this mistake worse I had one of the kids with me, so in true cart before the horse fashion, I promised that by the time they get off the bus tomorrow, there will be baby chicks. Don't get me wrong, I've wanted chickens for years and bought my house last year with that intention, but I was planning on getting them sometime in the next 2 weeks, not 24 hours. Between 3 kids, the weather (Monday we had a hailstorm, today it was 75 and this weekend the temps will drop down to the 30s), spring planting, and afterschool activities I don't know how I am going to keep up.

Thankfully, I've got almost everything I need to be ready for tomorrow. Actually, I got lucky with this one, my best friend's husband bought a new computer monitor off of Amazon (It looks like the old one and is the same size but its somehow better :idunno) and it came in a cardboard box that is the perfect size until I can get my permanent brooder built. My best friend is currently trying to talk me out of keeping them in the dining room. Then I've just got to clear the garbage the last owners left, dig up 50 paving stones, and frame and build the coop I designed before they need it. That's not too much, right?

Also any suggestions on how many chickens? I was thinking somewhere between 6 and 10. I wanted at least 2 each of Wellsummers, RIRs, and Barred Rocks.

WELCOME! Sounds like you have it all figured out! ;)
No plan survives first contact with the enemy. I am hoping everything goes according to the plan in my head, but I'm preparing for chickens living the dining room. Hopefully, they make it out onto the front porch within a week.

Without knowing your circumstances, how could any of us know how many chickens you should have?

At a guess, I'd start with six. Two years down the road, when they stop laying as much, add a few more spankin' new egg layers. Maybe cull your worse layers at that point (don't know how you feel about that) and continue the cycle.

And welcome.

Hello, and welcome! Good luck with those new chick's that you will be getting. The new chick's will still have to be kept warm until they get their feather's grown in.
I've got a decent sized covered front porch, but unfortunately, the outlet out there isn't currently working, I'm hoping a simple swap out the socket itself will fix the problem, so I can plug in the heat lamp. Otherwise, we're going to have some guests in the dining room for quite some time.

Thanks, I was leaning towards 6, but my little helper at TSC was adamant about having 10. between 3 kids and my baking habit, we can easily go through 2-3 dozen eggs a week, any extras will go to my best friend. While the kids are not fond of the practice, everyone is eventually destined for chicken dinner.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I wish you the best of luck with your chicks.
