Hello chicken lovers, I am Lyric, living in rural Georgia while the hubby makes us a small homestead (only 4 lil acres). Meanwhile, I am reading and reading about chickens and food preservation. He and I seem to want the same thing but with different methodology. Like I said, I am going to be reading up a storm. He is all about total free ranging. But, I have been listening to Patera at Appalachian Homestead and it seems keeping animals may be expensive. Hubby is old school, he has lived it in West Virginia, so I can't tell him a thing about anything re. farming/chicken raising, etc. It seems if we are wanting chickens to help feed us but have to buy feed it would be a wrap, coming off even at best. With all that WE ALL are facing I keep thinking a few chickens might be nice; but if I have to buy feed and there will be no feed to buy in coming weeks . . . well, you see my dilemma.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I feel new. We had some in Florida, but hubby was doing it HIS way; the coop was a hot mess. He says our homestead won't have the room for a chicken tractor; sooooooo . . . I am here reading all that I can.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None. We are renting while building the homestead. I will look here for Chicken 101 or some such to see how many I should begin with. I would think a small amount until I learn what I am doing.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I want pretty eggs. Seems I recall a breen Ameracauna (I may be spelling that incorrectly). But I would like pink, blue, brown, or green eggs and will research which ones are beginner friends to get them.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Aiding self-sufficiency.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Journaling, calligraphy, Bible study/reading.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Grown children; several grands; whisked off to country life when married hubby in 2011. Was living on an island off Tampa Bay after leaving the cold north. I am retired.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I am in another backyard group (can't think of the name this sec) and either that group recommended this one or vice versa (don't recall). I am finding the information invaluable. God bless you kind people for sharing knowledge with folk like me. I feel confident all will go well with my chicken venture after studying the information here. Thank you.

Hello, welcome to BYC!
Chicken keeping is expensive, when done right. Your eggs will cost you more than store bought eggs. But, when the stores have no eggs, you'll still have them. They'll be expensive eggs, but you can still make your husband the best (only) scrambled eggs around.
