I have a chick that hatched yesterday, she had a hard time of it getting through the shell and was trapped inside part of the membrane, so I freed her. The part of the membrane she had pecked through was wet but another part, under the shell she was still trapped in, was white and quite tough. I don't know whether it had dried out or not; there is plenty of humidity and the temperature is right...

When she was freed, I noticed a green substance on her and assumed this was the last of the yolk her body had absorbed. Will this little bit dry up and fall off or do I have to wash it off?

I'm doing nothing at this point because if it is the tail-end of the yolk, I don't want to interfere too much. Its just a small bit of green attached yet. She seems a little weak, her legs are fine but she doesn't walk yet. She can stand and straddles herself around to move... I think she just needs a little more time to recoup.

Advice? Ideas?

I just checked her, the little green knob is gone but she has a piece of shaving stuck to her. Since she has a good 24 hours of yolk in her, I thought I'd wait till tonight to wash it off her.

Good Idea?

Yes. Good idea.

Today, March 26th, is the third day after hatching; she was hatched yesterday. My hubby put some wood shavings in part of the brooder because they were beginning to mess a good deal. She has a large piece of shaving stuck to her that can be easily removed with a little warm water but I want to wait until tonight when she's a little stronger. She is slow to get up but I have just watched her walk a little so she just needs more time. She is certainly happy in the brooder with the other chicks.
