It was self defense

I was wondering the same thing. We've had numerous cases of rabies here lately in SW Arkansas. All in skunks.

Yeah, that's a pocket gopher all right.

Rabies would be highly unlikely because it almost never infects rodents, and there is no recorded record of a rodent ever transmitting it to human.

Still, that's bizarre and frightening and I would have instinctively kicked it if it charged me as well.

I don't know if it was just the shock of seeing it coming at me but this little yellow fanged demon seemed to be charging me at a full on sprint.

That would have scared me. They're small animals but they can be very mean and those teeth ARE dangerous! I've been bitten by a gopher before and had a completely pierced finger for a couple weeks from it. LONG teeth that go through just about anything.

Rodent includes many critters a couple of towns over from here this past summer a young woman was attacked by a woodchuck, she underwent rabies treatment, as rabies has been confirmed in woodchucks and beaver in this state and the woodchuck was not provoked.

Having them run at you is quite scary I would think. Not normal behavior. Glad no one was hurt.

Yes, I believe you killed a pocket gofer, Mortos!

YIPPEEE! Sorry--but as far as I'm concerned the only good gofer is a dead gofer!!! They do come out of their holes at night. I have had the pleasure of bludgeoning a couple over the years at night! The damage they do around the barn is dangerous for the horses and I have no regrets ending their little rodent lives.
