In the Brooder
Last week, I notice that one of my Buff Orphington's wasn't acting right. She had her feathers puffed up and she wasn't eating with the rest of the flock and she would stand away from the others and isolate herself. I brought her inside because I thought she was very cold. She wasn't improving for a few days so I decided to bring her to the vet after I noticed she had yellow, watery diarrhea and had nearly no appetite and was lethargic. The vet confirmed she wasn't egg bound or had egg yolk peritonitis. Fecal sample was negative for cocci or parasites but she decided to treat her for cocci due to blood in her feces and we had a very small sample to test. She finished her five day regimen of medicine and still, not really eating. My husband thought maybe a bowel obstruction. He administered an entire syringe of hot sauce and red vinegar to try to get her bowels moving. Would you believe the next day she passed a very large, hard poop? We opened it up to inspect it and it turns out she must have ate a small piece bailing twine! She has had large, normal droppings the last couple of days but has lost a considerable amount of weight from not eating much this week. I've been feeding her scrambled eggs and some small pieces of pasta. She still wants nothing to do with her pellets. Lessoned learned to make sure you have nothing in your coop or run that chickens can ingest and possibly die from. Including screws, staples or string of any kind. We are not out of the woods yet but praying she makes a full recovery. Any ideas of what I can feed her to make her gain some weight back?
