My first chicken experience started last November. I had to follow through with a promise I made to my son. I told him if he quit picking his nose he could get a pet of his choice. Well, he wanted a chicken (I was expecting a dog-I am so glad we didn't go that direction). We got our newly hatched chicks in November. They spent their first winter in my bathroom, great fun. I have had zero experience with chickens so I have frequented this forum since then for answers and help. THANKS!!!! We now have five hens, three RIRs and 2 Barred Rocks. My five children absolutely adore their hens and are begging for more. My 10 year old spends hours out with the hens and they all love her in return. Oh, and they did eventually move out of my bathroom. My son and husband built a lovely hen house and run for them. My husband is not an animal man. He was less than thrilled when we first got our girls. Now he is a fan and enjoys watching them peck about the yard and chase the cats (he likes the cats less than the hens).
So, after 10 months of being an outsider I am now officially in. Thanks for all the help and advice. I have found answers to all of my questions on this site. You are all fantastic.
