I brood my chicks outside. The weather here is perfect for this during April & May. I've found that the best spot for keeping the clear plastic brooder box is on top of my hot tub, which is just outside my living room window. It's inside my fenced yard and up high enough the snakes can't get in, so it's really the safest place for them. Plus I have the added convenience of having an outside electrical outlet right there for their light. I use an old oven rack for a cover on half of the top of the brooder to let out excess heat and give good ventilation.
So, at night we can look out the window to see how the babies are doing. They are all lit up from the brooder light, which also attracts all kinds of flying insects that get in through the oven grill for them to chase down and then play keep away with.
It's like having a huge tv right there in the window! We gave away our 'real' tv 6 years ago so this has really been fun!
