So Trudy the Broody has 8 eggs under her. On day 1 she had 10 but there was some fighting with another hen who had usurped her nest, and although Trudy won her eggs back- one broke and it gfunked up most of the others with yoke.
It was day 5 so I decided to carefully and quickly wash the rest of the eggs and put into clean bedding and then separate her from the flock in a broody pen within the hen house. She has been a dedicated broody the entire time, and yesterday at 10 am there was one cute wet chick, just hatched. Some of the other eggs were wobbling around but no pips that I could see.
Now it is 24 hrs later. I did a quick check (didn't lift out the broody hen, but took a peek under her) and I only saw eggs. I gently removed two, (one at a time) checking for pip holes. Nothing. I was careful to replace in the same position under the hen.
Can any one with experience offer advice? I AM a person who would take action and help a chick out of a shell. If you are not, that is absolutely fine. But... I would like to know what I can do or how long I should wait before taking action. I have helped a chick out before who pipped but after 9 hours had not zipped. He grew into a lovely healthy rooster.
I was going to check again at 4 pm, and this time I would bring a flashlight and check for internal pipping and fetal development. Thoughts???
I did not candle the eggs at all after day 5.
Thanks
