*sigh* I've got poultry fever, and my silly neighbors aren't curing me of it. I asked them if I could keep chickens, and they said NO but what about ducks? We had two Pekins in my old house--no problem. How hard would it be to keep some "covert" ducks? We have a huge yard (double lot) and we also have a bump out area in the house which creates a little space (about 5'x12') outside in the yard.

Could I potentially get 2 ducks (probably Cayuga or Welsh Harlequin) and keep them in there with out anyone knowing? I just can't go on like this... seeing all these beautiful birds on BYC and not having any. (the two full-length articles on the benefits of chickens/poultry in the latest Mother Earth News don't help.

So what is with the neighbors? Is poultry not allowed without neighbor's consent in your area?

While Welsh Harlequins are cool, and mine don't appear to be TOO loud at 3 weeks, I have no idea how load they will get at 6 weeks

Yeah. I have to get a certain percentage permission from neighbors in a 150' radius, and the next door neighbors kinda freaked the others into saying no. A few said yes, though...

What really makes me mad is that one neighbor told me to get some more experience. He was nice enough to take me to a farm where they had about a dozen chickens "so I could learn more about them". Well, I ended up telling the owner more about his chicks than he told to me! I told him which breeds he owned, how to tell if there eggs were fertile, and when he found an egg, I told him which chicken laid it!

The whole time he (the farmer) was dissing chickens and saying that they "weren't a money crop, that's for sure" and he was planning to get rid of them soon! GAAAHHHH!

So, I want to get one or two ducks and a chicken, possibly from a local feed store.
