(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm new to posting on BYC but I've always been around poultry, which is a long time since I'm no "spring chicken" myself! I grew up on a small farm and I guess chickens are in my DNA!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I recently lost 17 in a Fisher cat attack, most of my younger ones, which was devastating . Every loss is like losing a family member. I have about 21 assorted hens and 3 Lavender Orpington chicks I just hatched. & 7 eggs in my incubator. I was a total hatchaholic up to about 7 years ago when I had to stop cold turkey - I was overrun with roosters. I'm mostly interested in rare and endangered old breeds just for my own enjoyment. I sell a few eggs to friends.

(3) What breeds do you have? Right now 6 Barred Rocks, 1 Black sex link, 2 EE's - all rescues. 1 Speckled Sussex, 3 Ameraucanas, 3 Welsummers, 2 silkie roosters, 2 Golden Campines, 1 Barnevelder - all elderly. My oldest hen is "Barnie Green", an 11 year old Barnevelder who looks just as good as she always did.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Years ago while researching chicken stuff, I came across the early version of BYC. When I decided to start hatching again, I was amazed at how BYC had grown and changed! I'm a "lurker" by nature, just soaking up all the info I can. There is enough here to keep me busy for months!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love gardening, mostly veggies, and I crochet.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I love all animals and have 3 old dogs and 1 not very old cat. We're old enough to retire but my husband & I still work, me in the office of a large TB horse breeding farm - dream job for an animal lover!

Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself.

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry for the loss of your birds!

I know how hard it is to lose them. They really do become part of the family.

But I do wish you luck with the rest of your flock, your hatches and all other poultry adventures you have. Make yourself at home here on BYC and may your chickens bring you great joy all throughout your lifetime!

Thanks Two Crows. Chickens have always made me happy from back to my earliest memories! I've had 2 other devastating losses to predators (dogs & fox) and both times I swore "never again", but then, we just strengthen up the defenses and move on. I thought I had "Fort Knox" out there but the cold and snow this winter had heaved the ground just enough to open a 2" hole - just big enough for the fisher to get in. We saw it on a video camera we had set up - not the killing, thank heavens, but when it came back the next day. It laughed at our traps we had all over the place and moved on - have not seen it again. After I got over the shock I just went out & got myself a Brinsea mini 'bator (hoping to cut back on the "relapse" I knew was coming!) and the new little lives have lifted my spirits, as they always do!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the birds you lost, good luck with the new chicks and the hatches you have planned, yes it is addictive! Barnie Green sounds like an amazing hen!

Here is a not very good photo I took of Barnie Green a couple days ago. Got to get a better one Her feathers are still shiny and her eyes are bright - and she's still not very friendly!

The EE in the back is Snowflake, a rescue, who is 10 years old. She still lays an egg now and then!! I know because she did it right in front of me the other day. I love my old girls. So much character.
