I'm sooooo new at chicken keeping but find I am loving it. I've taken over my grandfather's place and the coop had been damaged and the chickens taken off. I'm down here in New Zealand so we have no predators that could harm them and today I found this group around by the vege patch.
I have no idea what they are can someone help me out with a breed?
Not worked out yet how to get a picture onto the page, as they on my blog perhaps you could let me know from that picture. Thanks.
Is it ok to have different breeds in the same coop?. hope that's not a dumb question.

Wow!
Thanks, grandpa!

I don't know what your chickens are, but it looks like you have an enchanted cottage there. Congrats, and good luck!

Hi Joanne,

Wow, what an adventure you are having. Good for you.

Your place looks wonderful, much better than back here in soggy old UK. lol

I saw your pics and the first 2 show chickens identical to mine. Here in the Uk at least they are called Black Rocks. I looked for them in particular becaue they are hardy birds that are good layers.

Maybe someone there can tell you a bit more about them, but here there is a place in Scotland where this particular mix has been given the name of Black Rocks, and in other places they are called pepperpots, as the Scots guy has rights over the name.

They are a cross between a Rhode Island Red Roo and a Plymouth Rock Hen.

I found my girls in September and they were point of Lay, and are now finally laying daily, and they are such lovely girls, really. Good fun to watch, friendly, and very happy little chickens.

I will try to post some pics of them and you can see the similarity.

Love your adventure, thank you for posting. keep us up to date with your journey.

Jena.

Joanne,

I have put this pic in here so you can see the similarity with my girls.

This was taken when I first got them and they were very young.

They are much bigger now,but you can see the colour mix.

We were all so enthralled with your blog site and situation, we missed this part!

Your question about housing different breeds in the same coop?

Nope, doesn't matter at all, they can easily be kept together unless you wish to specialize in one pure breed, it's fine!! Especially if they're used to each other already. Sometimes if you have one 'odd' colored hen, the others will pick on it, but not always, probably not even often... just keep an eye on them!
