I believe Shelly was referring to a gang box. The metal box that is used to mount electric outlets or switches. They make those in plastic too. Usually blue or gray. You would mount your thermostat in that.
I prefer to use what is known as Old Work boxes where you don't need to nail the box to a stud or board.
I may be wrong, but I think that is what was being referred to.
