Jack Russell around Chickens

We have two Basset Hounds (one is a Bagel, Basset/Beagle mix) and a Border Collie. The BC herds our ducks and the Bassets mostly ignore the chickens and ducks.

Except this guy. We call him our Four Legged Brooder Basset.

Wow, we have a young jack russell, about 8 months old I believe, and she doesn't bother the birds at all! She sleeps on the porch, and had a young pair of barred rocks sleeping with her until one of the silkies decided she liked the squishy bed...so now the silkie is sleeping with the JR. Last winter though, I had to redo the guinea pigs' cage (also on the porch) cause the JR would get in there and make their lives miserable

She didn't hurt them, but she sure chased them enough! About the only bird she 'bothers' is the African gander, and that's just because she likes his massages

She will break up a guinea fight once in a while, but she is a very good dog

We have terrier mixes that look like tall, curly coated JRT. Our dog also used to jump or climb fences to go on little adventures, she killed chickens..

It's been wonderful since we got a remote training collar. It has a beep setting and ten levels of shock correction. After a couple of days of one on one training, it's been great. Before she used to charge the pen all the time, now she gives it a very big berth. Once a worker left the gate open, she ambled out, and I beeped the collar. She returned and sat at the main closed gate and waited for me to let her back in. Terriers are difficult dogs to train, it's a big power struggle and pain doesn't work for them when it's coming from your hands. Now she associates her behaviour with the beeping/shock and if beeped she runs home immediately.

We were considering rehoming her, it was so bad. Now she's been angelic for months.
