Hello!

We have five lovely Japanese Bantam chicks. We are trying to find the right coop for them. Right now, we are looking to either build our own, or are looking at this one: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/petmate-superior-construction-chicken-coop-70401d

We understand that Japanese Bantams are not cold- hardy. We don't live in an area that gets very harsh winters, but we are still worried and want to know that we buy/build the right coop for their size.

Also- Is it true that 4-6 hens will use only one nest box?

ANY help is appreciated. We are brand new to owning chickens in general.

Thank you so much!

That coop should house your banties. As you get into chickens further along, you may see, that your coop is too small for your needs, but is a good starter. You can always add on to this one, or opt for something bigger that you build.
I just wanted you to be aware, that most prefab coops, especially small entry level ones are not all the well built. They will last a while for you to learn about chickens.
It is also a true statement that most small flocks will choose one favorite nesting box. If you have 2, it is a good idea, to convert it to one larger communal one. Chickens do like to squeeze into a nest even though it is occupied. A larger one will accommodate both hens side by side.
I have one Japanese Bantie, and other breeds as well.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome
