Hello,I just moved into a new house & there was a hen in the backyard sitting on about 7 eggs. So I decided to let them hatch instead of getting rid of it.
But now it's been about a month & a half & still nothin!!.. I took an egg out put it under a light & it looked smashed to one side so I broke the shell & it had feathers but obviously DEAD!... Should I just get rid of them so it doesn't stink up the backyard or see if any make it??? Idk?? I would feel bad to kill some good chicks.

Jeezo209,

Incubation for chicken eggs takes 21-days. If she has been on the same 7-eggs for a month and a half (45-days?) It isn't likely IMO that any chicks will hatch.

A very strange situation...having a lone hen.

At any rate--- WELCOME to the BYC forum. Hopefully some of the BYC experts will provide additonal insights.

Thanks.. Yea I'll get rid of....its probably been even longer than 45 days ....the chicken comes from the neighbors they have lots of hens & a rooster!!!...sucks in the morning!! Lol
