i “adopted a rooster and a hen” the rooster is doing his job protecting her but when I go in to do whatever he wants to peck at me like a little jerk. Now he has seen trauma and I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but he’s really starting to agrivate me. I would like to pet my chickens and he’s not a fan. Any secrets I’m missing?

BE THE BOSS. walk like it, talk like it, and handle him like it. Don’t put up with anything. If he comes after you, give him a gentle push with your foot, not hard enough to hurt, but get him in the air (not too high either) and tell him in an extremely firm voice “no”. I do that with my rooster and I’ve had nothing but success. Napoleon is an amazing rooster, he protects the hens well and I must admit I love him a lot, so I tried a bunch of things to help me keep him. This has worked best. He still has his sassy moments but I’ve figured out how to stop them quickly.

I just don’t wanna hurt him but I’m learning about this whole chicken world. Apparently it’s super stern parenting.

‘Tough love’ as they call it. You won’t hurt him using this method. Don’t throw him far or high (this can hurt his legs) but get him in the air and don’t stop until he walks away it stops attacking
Good luck!

Look up beekissed's article about managing roosters; it's very helpful. Walk 'through' him, never around him. Carry something, like a stick, feed bucket, cane, something that can reach out and bump him out of your way. And read beekissed's article!
How old is this boy? Cockerels can start mild, and ratchet it up bigtime, and be dangerous. They work very well in your crockpot!
IMO it's best to make pets out of your hens and pullets, and let the roosters do their work, which should NOT involve you in any way.

Oh the teenage years ,
Good luck , just killed my rooster today ....... sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

Have your goals in mind, know why you need a rooster,
Don’t give in , he can really hurt you , know when it’s enough

Start with a current picture of him. A great deal of insight can be gained by your interactions with him then. I am not the boss of my chickens, rather I am a benign giant for most. A small group of a dozen or so, about half are roosters, have a more intense interaction me with that still does not involve my being a part of pecking order.

I see the tittle of this thread and think, "I luv jerk chicken" and open it, but no recipe,,,,
I have a wire bottomless cage, if a rooster acts out, I pick it up and set it over him.
I keep "spare" roosters for breeding, and the "jerk" would be out of the flock and the nice guy in. My grandkids play in the same yard.
I also keep a youngster from time to time, once he hits the teenage time, he goes to a bachelor pad to grow out (the rest go to freezer camp or sold). Once he is grown, then he may or may not get his chance to be over the flock.
Good luck with yours!
