We got 8 black Jersey Giants through a hatchery. Since we ordered a straight run, we figured 50-50 give or take pullets to roos. Well, they are just over 10 weeks and only ONE has the full bright red comb and wattles. I know they tend to take longer to mature, but we would know for sure if any more were roos, right? I am definitely not complaining! I am more shocked that it seems that ended up with 7 girls out of 8!
From a hatchery nontheless!
I just figured I'd ask all y'all JG experts out there if the breed has a tendency for late developers (or if we are just very lucky!).
The only roo is a beauty too! (Obviously not show quality, but a beauty nonetheless. He's gonna be a big boy!). The tip of his middle toe got pecked off at 2 days old and apparently the toe next to it was broke as well (we couldn't tell until it was too late to reset. He doesn't seem to care though).
I like how the chicks all want in the picture!
