I have had several aggressive roos in the past (especially to kids) and heard that the Jersey Giant roos are rarely aggressive and the breed is an absolute joy. Anyone have much experience with these guys? I have little kids but my flock needs a roo because they free range. Thanks.

Only had a little bit of experience with Jersey Giants and they were hatchery stock... was not impressed with them... have had Australorp roos though and they were the best!

Yes, how many you had and how many were not "kid" aggressive. Sorry for the confusion.

Is all good, I confuse easy, lol... ;)

I've had about a half dozen I think, never had an aggressive one of those... very people friendly, mild mannered, beautiful and great with hens...

@Michael OShay is the best person to ask about Australorps though, he raised them for many years... believe his granddaughter made lap pets outta them too! :)

I've had Black Jersey Giants as well and they really are gentle giants. Still if I had only one rooster in a mixed flock it would be an Australorp for their calm and gentle disposition (my granddaughter has made lap pets of them).) Buff Orpington roos are really friendly and gentle as well, but the Australorps are better layers than either the JGs or the BOs and I would want my rooster to breed the excellent laying ability of the Australorps into my flock. Also, while all three breeds are very cold hardy, Australorps are considerably more heat hardy than the other two breeds.

Thanks a lot for the info, australorp it is. They're very pretty roos as well.

You're welcome. They look almost identical to Black Jersey Giants except the bottoms of the feet (and skin) are white instead of yellow like the bottoms of the JG's feet and skin. Of course, when they reach maturity (JGs are slow to mature), the Black Giants are heavier birds.
