The road to my current chickens has been long and winding. When I was a child my Grandmother would get the 25 free chicks with every 50# bag of feed each spring (she got many bags), of course we had to visit; but watch out for those geese! A few years later my Dad showed me how to take care of the duck and goose eggs in the incubator while he was out-of-town for work during the week and only home on weekends. Many years later my daughter chose to do 'punk-do hair' chickens for small pets in 4-H but she had much more fun the huge Barred Rocks that would sit on the doghouse with her than she did the Polish or the Sultans. Now 25 years later it is my time for the chicken adventure.

I amassed my chicken empire from multiple sources. From Craigslist I got some Japanese, 1 rooster, 2 hens and 12 chicks; they were moving and needed all their backyard chickens to go. Again from Craigslist, this time from a show breeder I got 4 Buff Orpington; 2 hens and 2 roosters. From Pruitt's Hatchery I ordered Bantams; 6 each of Grey Japanese, Blue Dutch, Barred Rock, Buff Brahma and, Light Brahma. From the local feed store I purchased 3 French Guineas and have 6 Lavender Guineas coming this Friday. Time to stop and get a winter worthy Coop ready.

Welcome to BYC you made a good splash - yes you will need to get going on a coop, Minnesota sure has cold winter We get pretty bad ones too. But like most chickens I handle the cold much better than heat. :bun
