Jungle fowl and BB Red

red jungle fowl are to domesticated chickens as grey wolves are to domestic dogs. the bb red is a color that can be found on many chicken breeds and red jungle fowl are that color too.

not entirely true...

Black Breasted Red are usually red "Enhanced" wildtype birds based on wildtype "e+" which is the same "e" allele found on the red jungle fowl, BUT Black Breasted Red can be had on other "e" alleles like eb(brown or partridge) eWh(dominant wheaten) ey(recessive wheaten) and any other cross between this(eb/e+ eWh/e+ and so forth)

here is the pics to show you the difference between Black Breasted Red and Wildtype, we will be using a Dutch bantam which is the closest bird in genes to the red jungle fowl

Black Breasted Red OEG

Wildtype or Duckwing colored bird(Dutch Bantam)

now a red jungle fowl(which is not as red as the Black Breasted Red OEG)

NOW a head to head comparison...

The Dutch is actually "Light Brown", and the ABA identifies the color of the Red Jungle Fowl as "Light Brown as in the Red Jungle Fowl".

I really love the "Fade Out" of the Red Jungle Fowls from the dark orange of the head down to the golden at the ends of the hackles.

But one does typically see the Red Jungle Fowl typically described as Black Breasted Red. This does a good job of showing how that isn't exactly right.

Interesting, I didn't realize that there were both a dominant and a recessive Wheaten genes. Definitely learned something today.

Well - at least this is something that the "genetic heretics" (amongst which I count myself) believe - the rest of the world are converts to the "there's only one wheaten that behaves either as a dominant or recessive in the absence/presence of melanisers" school of thought.

Cheers,
