We had a car speed down our gravel one lane dead end street and deliberately hit a chicken. They were going about 65 mph, in a 30mph area. She was actively walking out of the street when the driver hit her, she was 2/3 the way there. We are a working farm surrounded by other working farms with no less than 30 signs saying slow down (13 are ours, 4 belong to the town, the rest the other farmers). We are going to find a solution while still allowing free roaming and put in speed bumps (town allows).

That's awful, I'm so sorry! I hope the speed bumps help. We petitioned for one where we used to live, and got nowhere. Our kids were much younger then and I wouldn't allow them to play in our own yard alone because of the people who flew down our street.

My husband used to threaten to take bags of Quikrete out to the road late at night, just plunk them down, hit them with hose, and wait, lol.

Horrible!
Our dead end street has the occasional idiot driving way too fast, the children being our main concern.
They usually don't make it out without one or two of us standing in the road to educate them on proper safety and etiquette.
My neighbor once threw a 4X4 into the road to stop a dirtbike... the rider was scuffed up, the bike was bent, the infraction was never repeated.

It's just not a hard thing to do to drive, especially in an area with kids and animals, like a decent human being. But so many people choose not to.

That’s just terrible, I’m really sorry to hear that.

One has to be wary of the distinct lack of empathy required of an individual that purposefully runs down animals crossing the road, especially livestock on a dead end agricultural road as you described. I hope that you can install some speed bumps if not report the culprit.

Wow, what is wrong with people. I'm so sorry you lost one that way. I can see if the bird was directly in their path (I was taught never to swerve for an animal, since you can end up hurting someone else), but to go out of your way to hit her? Unreal.
I swerved for a dog once, and I rolled my Jeep while 6 months pregnant with my 2nd baby. Thankfully we were both fine, but I sure wish I'd listened when I was told that.

But to your point, yes, intentionally swerving TO HIT an animal, is sick.

Thankfully the township said we were allowed to put speed bumps out. They just have to be specific types.

We checked the cameras, but no license plate unfortunately could be seen. We live in a touristy area so we get people all over who come up and act like they own the place.

I don't get why people don't want to just enjoy the ride. Every day I roll through the area at a super slow pace and because of that I get to see so much. Just this morning I saw a peacock with 4 babies, tons of deer with their fawns, a hawk eating something, eagles sitting in the trees, and a porcupine waddling across someone's drive way. I'll never get people who just don't care enough to even try to enjoy the sights around them.

Thanks for letting me rant.
